Yikes! I think the Sohmas just about win the award for “most screwed up family” in manga — and considering how much I’ve read over the years, that’s saying a little bit of something.

It’s easy to say, “They don’t make movies like that anymore,” and then a film like Once comes around. As the director admits in the extras, the plot could be scribbled in its entirety on a cocktail napkin, but its execution is brilliant in its simplicity, reservedness, and honesty.
