I’m tough on mystery-thrillers. If the author telegraphs whodunit (or how they did it) too clearly or too early, or if the twist ending truly comes out of nowhere in an implausible fashion, this amateur sleuth becomes very dissatisfied.
Writer Gillian Flynn strikes the right balance with Sharp Objects, which – to its credit – reads like a more like true crime non-fiction than a novel, thanks to the realistically observant, first-person narration of its reporter-protagonist, Camille.
Highly recommended… especially if you appreciate V.C. Andrews-style family dysfunction. ★
