So at my mother’s repeated urging, I went to see P.S. I Love You and witnessed first-hand what film finally converted my mother into a Gerard Butler superfan.
The peeps who read the book upon which it was based are complaining it didn’t follow the story to a T, but I found it very entertaining.
Butler is pitch perfect, and the movie flat-out wouldn’t work if any other actor had been cast in his role. Seriously. And the end wouldn’t have worked if anyone else beside Jeffrey Dean Morgan had been playing his part.
But the biggest surprise — and a positive one at that — was Hilary Swank. I’ve always respected her as an actress, but I was never a fan. Her work never really connected for me, and I couldn’t picture how they’d have her pull off a drama that required the touch of a romantic comedy… but she did. She took the potential awkwardness and turned it into something that made her character endearing and heartbreakingly realistic.
