One of the most interesting features on The Matrix Revisited was a jam-packed, five-minute segment on the upcoming Matrix anime project, dubbed “Animatrix.”
Primarily narrated by Matrix producer Joel Silver and Animatrix producer Michael Arias, the piece adds details to what is already known about the project:
- It will be an anthology-style series of short subjects, potentially distributed via the Internet and on DVD.
- Five of the stories were written by Andy and Larry Wachowski (The Matrix creators) and will be expanded upon by the Japanese animation directors. “The remaining Japanese directors are doing original stories,” according to Arias.
- Madhouse directors Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust), Takeshi Koike and Mahiro Maeda (Blue Submarine 6) are slated to direct installments, and Square will be producing an installment with the technology that was used for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
The segment also includes interviews with the aforementioned artists, in addition to quite a bit of pre-production/production storyboard art. For more information, go buy the DVD. It’s well-worth its price for the information it provides.
